The history of Drimmelen
Around 1700, Menno van Coehoorn was commissioned by the Republic to establish a southern defensive line. Although initially there was talk of a wall or rampart, Van Coehoorn decided to cleverly utilize the availability and manageability of water from streams and rivers: he employed water as a means of defense and only built ramparts where inundation was not a solution.

Drimmelen is much more than only the Biesbosch
The municipality of Drimmelen consists of different villages: Made, Drimmelen, Hooge Zwaluwe, Lage Zwaluwe, and Terheijden. It doesn't matter where you stay in Drimmelen; all our villages are easily accessible by car, but also certainly by bike. There are beautiful cycling routes and walking trails to discover throughout all the villages!

The area of Drimmelen has a lot of variety which makes it the ideal place for a hike or bike route. And there are many possibilities to explore the area, on foot or by bike. You will be surprised of the different landscapes that this area of 10 by 20 kilometers has to offer.
